Types of Deep Cycle Marine Batteries
When it comes to the types of deep cycle batteries, they can be divided into four categories:
Flooded Lead Acid Deep Cycle Battery – the oldest type of car battery still in use, requiring charging when the DOD drops to 50%~70% and being stored upright in a ventilated environment to avoid leakage.
Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) Deep Cycle Battery – a type of Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) battery that requires a unique charger due to its sensitivity to overcharging.
Gel Cell Deep Cycle Battery – another type of VRLA battery, also requiring a special charger and regulator.
Lithium Deep Cycle Battery – a newer option compared to lead-acid batteries, offering advantages such as being lighter, having a higher usable capacity, faster recharge rate, longer cycle life, and providing constant voltage over any rate of discharge. The most recent type of lithium battery is Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4), commonly used in deep cycle applications.
Deep cycle batteries are commonly used in various applications that require continuous power for longer periods, such as electric golf carts, floor cleaning machines, scissor lifts, wheelchairs, scooters, forklifts, recreational vehicles, boats, and renewable energy systems.
The lifespan of deep cycle batteries can vary depending on the type and maintenance. On average, lithium batteries last 4-10 years.
To ensure the longevity and proper functioning of deep cycle batteries, it is important to follow maintenance tips such as using a matching charger, avoiding inverted battery packs, storing in a dry and ventilated environment, avoiding exposure to outdoor elements, and not touching the positive and negative electrodes simultaneously.
